Movie Review: Attack of the Puppet People

I'm so excited! I love these old movies because they're so weird. This one was very intriguing. It promised "doll dwarfs" (incorrect plural, by the way) and "crushing giant beast".

Some creepy doll maker guy works in a building where people keep disappearing. His secretary Janet goes missing and is replaced, all the while a doll of her likeness sits on his desk. His new secretary Sally Reynolds finds a letter to Janet ripped up in the garbage.

Doll maker's friend, a puppeteer named Emil, arrives because he needs a marionette maker. He asks about Emma and after Franz, the doll maker, doesn't recognize the name, Emil reminds him that that was the name of his wife. Franz recounts how she'd left him.

Sally goes to a drive-in with Bob, her man friend, and they get engaged. The next day Bob is gone. Sally knows something is wrong so she goes to the police station and tells them that Mr. Franz has people disappearing. The police sergeant comes to the factory and decides nothing is out of the ordinary.

Dr. Franz turns Sally into a doll-sized person, reuniting her with Bob and introducing them to all the doll people. While Emil talks to Dr. Franz, the dolls try to use the shrinking machine to make them bigger. It doesn't work and they have to scramble to get back to their places.

The police sergeant sees Dr. Franz's ad for a new secretary and decides something is up with Dr. Franz and that maybe Sally was right. Emil shows up as the "dolls" are "partying" and tells the good creepy dollmaker that he'd spoken to the sergeant, who asked him if Dr. Franz is apt at making people disappear.

Dr. Franz tells Sally that they're going to have a going away party at a theater. She informs the others that this could be their last party. Bob decides to write a message on a notepad and fold it into a paper airplane, but it doesn't make it out the open window. Dr. Franz takes the "dolls" to the theater where he plays with a marionette for hours until he begins the performance of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He casts Sally as the girlfriend. Bob tosses something into his coffee before attacking the marionette. While nice worker at the theater who brings Dr. Franz his coffee asks him why he's shouting, Sally, Bob and the others make a run for it. After being chased by a rat, a cat, and a dog, Bob and Sally find themselves cutting their way into a box and being delivered back to Dolls Inc.

Bob and Sally use the machine to make themselves normal sized again and simply walk out of the building.

And that's how it ended.

No sign of the others, no concern for the others. No justice. Nothing.

Moral of this movie: Being a secretary is hard work.
