Movie Review: The Voices

Ryan Reynolds are in a lot of movies where he hears or sees weird things.

This go-round he plays Jerry, a factory worker. Things all seem okay until you hear a Scottish voice in Jerry's apartment after seeing that it's only him, his dog Bosco and his cat Mr. Whiskers.

Jerry is slightly - not very subtly - obsessed with Fiona. He talks to his therapist and we find out that he's got a mental disorder that is hereditary, passed to him by his mother who heard "angels". Mr. Whiskers is not very nice, making Jerry feel bad about himself in his Scottish accent.

Some of the girls from the office invite Jerry out for dinner and drinks. He ends up driving Fiona home. He invites her out to dinner, but she stands him up to go karaoke-ing with Lisa (Anna Kendrick) from the office. Jerry is devastated. Fiona's car won't start and somehow he goes by her as she tries to flag down a car. She wants to go to Doran's, a cheap greasy burger joint. On the drive there, he asks her a trivia question. "There are four named angels in the Bible. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael - who's the fourth?" He hits a deer. The deer begs him to slit his throat so he does and then he answers the trivia question. Lucifer is the fourth angel. Fiona, reasonably scared, runs from the truck. He chases her and accidentally stabs her when he tackles her. She's suffering so he stabs her again. Bosco tries to convince Jerry to go to the cops. Mr. Whiskers, however, convinces Jerry that killing is instinctual and that he just needs to get rid of the body. Jerry gets the body, but leaves a shoe and some other bloody heap of something that I couldn't identify.

Jerry goes to his therapist. He tells her that he "usually" takes his medication. He says that even though the bad times are very, very bad, he enjoys the beauty and inspiration not taking the pills allows him to experience. She tells him to take his meds or she'll have to report him to Corrections. Jerry goes home and starts hacking Fiona up. Her parts are put into tubberware and placed in a very organized row of towers on the kitchen counter. Her severed head is put in the fridge. Bosco tells Jerry to take his meds, Mr. Whiskers tells him not to. Fiona's head finally convinces him to take them. He has dreams of his mother, father, and step-father. When he - clear headed and medicated - sees his kitchen, which is horrifying, he knocks his pills into the sink and throws up.

Fiona's head, Bosco, and Mr. Whiskers are back in the morning. Fiona tells him to kill someone so she can have a friend. Mr. Whiskers is the one that kind of seals it and Jerry asks Lisa to go out for a drink with him. He takes her to his childhood home. We see in a flashback that his mother tried to cut her throat before the hospital could come and take her away. When she couldn't do it, she asked him to finish it and that's how the hospital and the sheriff found them. Jerry ends up spending the night at Lisa's.

Lisa goes to surprise him at his house and after he locks himself out, she manages to lockpick her way in. A chase ensues and she ends up hitting her head on his bed frame and to end her suffering, he kills her. When the office people get suspicious after seeing a newspaper article on Jerry's mother, Allison goes to see Jerry. He kills her.

Jerry tells his therapist and after she says, "It's not like you've killed anyone", he confesses. When she tries to call the police, he tapes her up and tries her to a field. She calms his down by telling him he's not alone. Two guys from the office are at Jerry's. They find Lisa and Allison's cars covered around the back. The one guy goes inside, letting Bosco escape. Jerry takes the therapist back to his place and like everyone else, she's terrified. She can see everything the way it is, but he sees it as pristine. Jerry goes to search for Bosco and Mr. Whiskers. He finds Mr. Whiskers sitting on his therapist, but Bosco is gone. So she's not alone, he brings out Fiona's head and puts it in front of her.

The cops arrive and Jerry goes into the ventilation system. A gas leak is ignited and Jerry internally debates whether to escape the blaze or stay and end the pain. He chooses to end it. Jerry, Lisa, Fiona, Allison, his mom, his dad, and oh, yeah, Jesus sing and dance in bright colored outfits.

Ryan Reynolds was brilliant as always, even as Bosco and Mr. Whiskers. Mr. Whiskers was my favorite though. You can't go wrong with a homicidal Scottish cat.

Moral of this movie: Don't stand people up, don't surprise anyone at their home and then lock pick your way in when they say not to, and if you suspect foul play, don't investigate alone. All of these things will have you in a selection of tubberware and your head in a fridge.
