Movie Review: Adaline

Adaline is about an artist named Daniela (Danny for short) who inherits money and estate from an aunt she didn't know she had. As always with my Amazon Prime watchlist, I went into this movie with no expectations. Luckily for me and this movie, my low expectations were met and raised. There were good characters I could root for or dislike, good suspenseful, scary moments and a strange, yet okay story behind all the happenings.

Danny isn't my favorite character in the movie, but she isn't bad. Marvin, the stereotypical "special" man who is looking for a treasure his grandpa had told him about, is probably my favorite.

Adaline is the name of a girl that once lived in the house with her two sisters and their father. Sister A found out that Sister B was having relations with Sister A's fiance. Sister A goes to strike Sister B with a gun, but instead ends up shooting and killing her. Sister A runs a bath and slits her wrists. Adaline's father decides she's a witch and locks her in the attic. All of this is learned from a diary Danny finds. Strange things start happening, she keeps seeing a woman in white and having weird dreams about being buried alive. She starts a relationship with her neighbor John.

Danny's ex shows up and attacks her. Danny's bestie admits that she'd hired a prostitute to show some skin to her ex in order to prove he was a cheating creepy creeperton. For some reason, Danny gets mad at bestie and throws her out. Marvin has found an unmarked grave site and the coffin says "save Daniela" and "Adaline" on it. He realizes that Daniela and Adaline have the same letters. He goes to tell Danny, but finds dead ex in the attic instead. All of the weirdness going on, the drawing of the inverted pentagram and the deaths, was by John. When Marvin finds them, John has Danny tied up to an inverted pentagram. Horrifyingly, John kills Marvin. He then goes on this rant about the number 13 and how they're reincarnated. Danny's bestie shows up and incapacitates John. It never shows or tells us what happens to John.

The last shot is of Danny, Danny's besties, and Marvin (who I was genuinely pleased to see was still alive) at the grave of Adaline, who's body had been hidden away in the forest until Marvin found it.

Moral of this movie: Film rule #1: Don't read anything aloud and #2: Don't mess with music-playing contraptions of any kind are both broken here. Follow these rules, guys.
