Vampire Diaries premiered just as I started writing Blood Red Roses. And like Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley sank into my psyche - and again, for obvious reasons. I knew he was perfect as Doyle because he didn't seem like he'd be Captain of the Guard.


Doyle had been around for a while, unlike Cattie. He'd been floating around in my head before Jean-Claude so we've gotten to know each other well. He's definitely eased a bit over the years, laughs a lot more. He started out as a bodyguard, nothing more and nothing less. He was muscle. Not obvious muscle. Sarah has a lot of guards who would be more apt for the physically intimidating department than Doyle, but he is definitely stronger in every other way.


I meant for him to be a bodyguard and nothing more, but like most of them do, he decided to go another route and gain more power as the books progressed. Soon he was replacing Argus, which I didn't see coming. I was planning on having Argus around for a long time, give Sarah something to swat at every once in a while.
Doyle and Sarah were never really going to have a true relationship. They're friends as much as Doyle will let himself be friends with her, but ever since Kyra, he's been very wary of relationship.
