HCW: Creature from the Haunted Sea

Date Watched: January 12, 2013
Date Released: 1961
Starring: Antony Carbone, Betsy Jones-Moreland, Robert Towne
Running Time: 75 minutes
Rating: 1 ½ of 5

The movie opens up with a guy getting his tennis shoes shined. Why? I have no idea. All of a sudden, he’s being chased and shot at. Shoe-shine guy is shot and killed. Apparently. The guy ends up in a bar talking to a woman playing chess. She blinks a complete total of three times and they kiss before he walks into a table and leaves.

There’s a secret meeting between some military from Cuba and our guy, whose real name is K-something. It’s a number like 007, but definitely not as cool.

K-007 makes a radio or a sound recorder out of a pickle and some hotdogs. One of the crew members come in and eats the pickle. We’re on a glorified pontoon and no one realizes that there’s a crew member who’s not a crew member, but a ā€œsecret agentā€. K-007 is the worst secret agent ever by the way.

Betsy Jones-Moreland as Maribel (AKA: the only woman on the tiny boat) was the best part of this movie for me. She’s the reason it got such a high rating. She’s got the sass and the beauty a 60s actress should have had. And she just sat there rolling dice in a bathing suit and singing.
The monster has a striking resemblance to Grimace, of McDonald’s fame.

Two women suddenly spring out of the jungle – a mother and a daughter. The daughter – Mango – gets eaten or whatever by the monster while they’re playing water tag, an already treacherous activity. Maribel’s brother Happy Jack, who was in love with Mango, fights the monster and gets his back broken or something. He was fighting one moment, the monster put him in a bear hug and then he stopped fighting.

Maribel forgives her boyfriend Lorenzo (the captain of our crew of nincompoops) for getting her brother killed and as they embrace, the monster boards the ship and kills everyone, slowly and as everyone just stands and waits for their turn to die. Lorenzo, K-007, Carlita (K-007’s lady friend), and Mango’s mom all make it out alive. The monster gets the gold.
